Course Duration: 4 Months  

Format: Online Modules + Hands-On Practical Sessions

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you will:

– Understand the foundational theory of acupuncture.

– Gain hands-on experience in needle placement.

– Be equipped to incorporate acupuncture into your daily veterinary practice, enhancing pain management and patient quality of life.

Course Structure

Module Breakdown:

Module 1: Introduction to Acupuncture

   – History, science, and foundational theory (59 mins video + resources)   

Module 2: Principles of Acupuncture

 – Explore core principles and practices (76 mins video + resources)

Module 3: Patterns of disease

   – Delve into the root causes of conditions (51 mins video)

Module 4: Meridians and channels

  • Understand how energy flows throughout the body (40 mins video + resources)

Module 5: Acupoints

  – Focus on points for respiratory, gastrointestinal, immune, anxiety, and pain management (55 mins video + resources)

Module 6: Practicalities

– Learn about needle insertion and safety, as well as contraindications  (46 mins video + resources)

Total presentation time: 5.5 hours (excludes additional reading)

Participants will receive access to all theory material upon joining the course. Participants are required to have completed all the theory prior to the first practical taking place. 

Practical Sessions:

Three hands-on sessions, one Sunday each month for three months, providing personal guidance from Dr. Tanya Grantham. Please be advised that all practical sessions and points pertain to  small animals.

Content: How to insert needles, disposal, contra-indications, safety.

Participants are required to have completed Modules 1 and 6 of the theory and must have obtained at least 80% for the associated quizzes prior to attending the practical session.

Session 2 of 3

Date: Saturday 15 March 2025

Time: 09h00 to 15h00

Venue: Diep River Southern Suburbs Cape Town

Content: Identification of specific points on skeleton and patients. Practice needle placement. 

Participants are required to have completed Modules 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the theory and must have obtained at least 80% for the associated quizzes prior to attending the practical session.

Session 3 of 3

Date: Saturday 10 May 2025

Time: 09h00 to 15h00

Venue: Diep River Southern Suburbs Cape Town

Content: Additional acupoints discussed and demonstrated. Further application with regards to choice of points. Identification of points and needle insertion on patients. More holistic choice of points based on patient history. 

Students will be required to complete a practical test / assessment on this day.
